In Ghana, over 60 per cent of the populations make their living from subsistence farming. On average, 27% live in extreme poverty in Ghana, with Northern Ghana being the most deprived and under-developed part of the country; it is estimated that up to 80% of the population is poor. The three northern regions of Ghana are the poorest and most deprived regions in Ghana, with limited infrastructure, education and health facilities, and natural resources [Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) 2012]. Various researches have established that only 40% of the households in Northern Ghana are food secure during an entire year, 30% are food insecure during the pre-harvest season and the remaining 30% are food insecure throughout the year. UNICEF (2002) has established that about 30-40% of the children in Northern Ghana are chronically malnourished, leading to a large group of mentally retarded adults.READ MORE>>
